Jacob Blauer2025 Vice President Nominee

Jacob Blauer

Washington State University

With over two decades of experience in the potato and crop science industry, I bring a deep- rooted commitment to agriculture, scientific innovation, and community engagement. From my early days on my family’s farm to my first professional role as a Production Supervisor at Lamb- Weston—where I managed processing operations across fry, flake, and starch lines—I have been immersed in the full spectrum of the potato industry. That hands-on experience inspired a passion for problem-solving and innovation, ultimately leading me to pursue a Ph.D. in Molecular Plant Science at Washington State University. Today, as an Assistant Professor of Horticulture at WSU, I remain driven to advance potato research and foster meaningful collaboration between academia and industry.

My extended professional path has spanned academia and private industry, including key leadership roles at the J.R. Simplot Company – Plant Sciences, where I led the agronomic R&D team for elite trait development in potato germplasm and designed a certified seed research program, and at Forage Genetics International, where I served as Senior R&D Manager and lead alfalfa breeder for the western U.S. overseeing multi-state research operations. These experiences strengthened my expertise in research design, team management, and strategic communication, all while keeping me closely connected to growers and end-users. Since returning to WSU in 2021, I have led postharvest research for the Northwest Potato Variety Development Program, secured over $1.8M in research funding, and co-developed two novel technologies—one for in-field heat stress screening and another for sprout inhibition to improve storage.

I bring to the PAA Board a unique blend of academic insight and industry acumen, along with a track record of strategic leadership, grant success, and effective mentorship. My strengths include science communication, stakeholder engagement, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. I have led many educational initiatives, including course instruction, seminar series, and professional development workshops, to promote the next generation of scientists and leaders.

Within the PAA since 2009, I have served the association in various leadership roles, including as the Physiology Section Chair (twice) and currently as a Director on the PAA Board. I have been involved in fundraising, event planning, business development, and the launch of PAA- sponsored webinars aimed at increasing member engagement and education.

If elected Vice President, I will continue building bridges between industry and academia, champion quarterly section-led trainings, and promote interdisciplinary solutions to the evolving challenges facing potato research, production, and storage. My vision is to enhance the relevance and reach of the PAA, support inclusive professional development, and ensure that our community remains a vibrant hub for knowledge exchange, innovation, and camaraderie.
