Varieties
- Norchip (Solanum tuberosum)
ORIGIN: Norchip was tested as ND5899-1 and released by North Dakota State University
in 1968. The parentage is ND4731-1 (Norgleam x Antigo) x M5009-2
(a selection from the University of Manitoba).
CHARACTERISTICS: Norchip has a determinate growth habit, medium-early
maturity, medium-large plant size and tends to be upright. Stems
are green without other pigmentation. Nodes are green, straight
and not swollen. Leaves are medium in size, light green (pale
at maturity)
and closed. The terminal leaflets are large, lanceolate with truncate
bases and asymmetrical lobes. Primary leaflets are large and tend
to cup when plants are under stress. Petioles are green, flowers
are white, anthers are orange and pollen is abundant and of fair
quality.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES: Chip color
is good to excellent at harvest and after long term storage. Tubers
are moderately tolerant to common scab and potato flea beetle, but
susceptible to late blight, Verticillium wilt, virus X, leaf roll
and spindle tuber. Norchip is highly susceptible to early blight.
Tubers develop growth cracks, off type and dumbbells when plants
are stressed.
