Varieties
- Sangre (Solanum tuberosum)
ORIGIN: A selection
from the cross Viking x A6356-9. It was tested under the pedigree
of AC 67560-1 and was released jointly by Colorado State
Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA-Aberdeen in 1982.
CHARACTERISTICS: Sangre is a medium maturing, fresh market red
potato adapted to the irrigated areas of the West. Plants are
slow to emerge,
medium in size and spreading. Stems are medium in size, with red
pigment at the nodes. Leaves are large, dark green, slightly closed,
pubescent and ovate. Petioles have red pigmentation. Flowers are
few, lavender in color with orange anthers. Tubers are oval to
oblong and smooth with shallow eyes and a dark red, slightly
netted to netted
skin. Yields are medium to high with medium specific gravity.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES: Sangre
plants grow rapidly and tubers size early and are excellent for boiling
and baking. The variety is susceptible to early and late blights,
Verticillium wilt and moderately susceptible to dry rot, but moderately
resistant to early blight tuber rot, highly tolerant to leafroll
net necrosis and rarely exhibits hollow heart. Tubers tend to develop
excessive netting under dry soil conditions resulting in a brownish
and unattractive appearance.
