NOTICE OF VACANCY: Assistant Professor and Extension Economist, WSU

TITLE: Assistant Professor and Extension Economist, School of Economic Sciences, College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences

Washington State University (WSU) is a comprehensive land-grant research institution co-located in Pullman and Spokane, with additional campuses in the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco and Kennewick) and Vancouver.  There are ten colleges and a graduate school.  More than 18,600 undergraduate and graduate students are served by the Pullman campus.  WSU offers some 245 fields of study including more than 150 majors plus many minors, options and certificate programs.   Bachelor's degrees are available in all major areas, with master's and doctoral degrees available in most, the University is one of the largest residential universities in the West.  Pullman offers a friendly, small-town living environment.  To learn more about the Pullman community, visit:. POSITION: Tenure track, full-time, 9-month

SALARY AND RANK: Commensurate with training and experience.  WSU offers a professional benefit package and contributes to TIAA-CREF retirement plans.

DATE AVAILABLE: Proposed start date is January 1, 2012

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will have statewide extension education  responsibilities in crop and specialty crop economics and marketing and will have research and professional service expectations commensurate with other faculty positions in the School of Economic Sciences (SES). The extension program will contribute effective education and public and private solutions for economic problems based on high quality research. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct an approved program of research consistent with the mission of the WSU Agricultural Research Center.  S/he will develop significant research programs and interact with other SES and non-SES faculty and extension statewide faculty to develop state-of-the-art, relevant, and effective outreach.  The successful candidate will seek clientele input, support, and/or involvement in determining program priorities, setting educational goals and objectives, developing education program implementation, audience recruitment, and evaluation of program impacts.  S/he will obtain external grant funding in support of extension and research programs and will mentor graduate and undergraduate students.  The successful candidate will also advise graduate students and mentor them in their Masters thesis and PhD dissertation research, and will teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level classes in the academic program of the School.


OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be committed to diversity in education programming and the workplace (dimensions of diversity include gender, culture, age, sexual orientation, education, and income); will understand and carry out the principles and specific requirements of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the American Disabilities Act, the Affirmative Action Plan, and all pertinent rules and regulations; and will participate as a WSU faculty member in activities, such as committees, governance, and professional associations, which are essential to institutional operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

1. Ph.D. in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related field by date of hire.

Desired:

1. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a nationally recognized extension education program in crop and specialty crop economics and marketing relevant to the State of Washington.

2. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a nationally recognized research program leading to effective economic problem solving and scholarly publications that supports and complements the extension education program.

3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching economics or marketing courses.

4. Strong competency in economic theory and quantitative methods.

5. Effective  written and oral communication skills.

6. Ability to interact effectively with external constituencies, such as producer associations and other organizations and agencies, and respond to changing needs using technology and computer skills.

7. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

8. Ability to work with a variety of audiences and persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
